LARP

About this time last year I attended Legacy, a live-action role playing game held at the Faire Play campsite in Montrose and run by several of my friends , for the first time.   As a long-time roleplayer but LARPing virgin, I expressed my fears at trying something new; as the season progressed I found that I enjoyed it quite a bit, despite the cold and wet and sometimes terrible “That Guy” roleplayers that I would encounter.  Legacy’s inaugural season ended in November of last year the weekend before my wedding, and I was eager for April to roll around once more in order to go back.

Hey, I'm the one getting married next week.

First time for everything.

This past weekend was the final event of the season for Legacy, up at Faire Play in Montrose, and while you may be disappointed to read that I didn’t punch anyone in the junk this time around, I did end up tied to a tree and licked by a giant boner-inducing frog.

Pay attention, folks: there are statements that have never before been uttered in the history of world, and that was just one of them.

Well this is it, folks: the last Legacy event of its inaugural 2012 season is this weekend, and we’re off to go freeze our asses off for the next few days.  I’m looking forward to the event, but I think I’m more looking forward to not having to risk Frozen Testicle Syndrome for at least three months.  Still, I’m sure it’s going to be fun if I get a chance to thaw out.  If I’m not back on Monday you know I’ve ended up a permanent fixture of the Faire Play camp.

Man, the Joker really let himself go.

Heeeeeere’s Johnny!

Have fun this weekend, folks – or as much fun as you can have in the dark or sitting on line at the gas station, if you were “lucky” enough to get your shit pushed in by Hurricane/Superstorm Sandy.  Just know I’ll probably be as physically miserable as the rest of you!

I know I was all high and mighty about doing it anyway the other day, but there’s sometimes just not enough hours in the day to get everything done.  In lieu of getting up to camp last night at something like 3 in the morning, I simply scheduled a couple of bullshit posts for your amusement and to prove to the Google web crawler that I’m not a complete deadbeat.

That being said, please enjoy some goofy shit while I freeze my harbls off up in the wilds of Montrose, Pennsylvania.

I am a sexist pig. Deal with it.

Smuggling some goods home from the Tic Tac factory.

Well ladies and gentlemen, it’s time for another Legacy weekend!  The fiancée and I will be spending the day getting our affairs in order so we can leave for three days filled with running around in the woods, going uphill both ways, and freezing our asses off overnight.  I don’t know what it is about Faire Play but it’s a good 10 degrees cooler there than anywhere else nearby – which is great in the summer, but not so fun in the spring and fall – so it’s all about layering and sleeping curled up next to a plug-in heater.  Not so authentic, but the main building on the site is a big, old, drafty barn with no insulation, so it’s either freeze to death or sleep in a giant pile of naked sweaty fat LARPers; I’ll take my chances with hypothermia.

Tune in over the weekend for some pre-selected goofy bullshit!  You’ll all get a full report Monday morning once I return, hopefully without accidentally castrating a staff member.  Vae victus, Ford.

Okay a lot of duct tape.

They just need a little duct tape.

I have triumphantly returned from the wet, soggy weekend more or less intact.  My boots, on the other hand, have not; the soles of both are more or less completely blown, which means I’ll have to get them repaired before I can use them again.  I’m actually surprised they lasted as long as they did; they were really more of a costume boot than anything else, designed to strut and fret an hour upon the stage, not in the mud one weekend a month.

The weather forecast for the weekend up in Montrose, Pennsylvania – home of the Faire Play campsite – is calling for rain, and lots of it.  This means that I’ll be going through socks and underwear like crazy for the next few days, as the fiancée and I are heading up to Faire Play for Legacy’s July event.  In my head I’ll be looking like this all weekend:

BRIAN BLESSED WILL FUCK YOUR SHIT UP

CRY “GOD FOR HARRY, ENGLAND, AND SAINT GEORGE!”

However, I know that I’ll actually look like this instead:

This is some bullshit.

“Please kill me.”

Stay dry.  See you after the weekend!

Heading up to Faire Play later today for another weekend of getting beaten up by people who are much better than me when it comes to fighting with a latex boffer weapon.  I need a bigger shield.

To mark the occasion, enjoy this trailer for Realm of LARP, a new “fantasy” reality series that’s going to be aired on the Nerdist Channel!  Not only is this particular game filmed at a nearby game, but one of my friends and fellow Legacy player, Drew Luckenbach, is one of the featured players, so give it some love.
